Who is up for round 3? MBFE 2017

It's spring semester of an odd-calendar year, and this means it's time for the BYU-Idaho Department of Biology's Marine Biology Field Experience.  Starting in Spring 2013 the Biology Dept. has sponsored a field experience for students interested in getting their feet wet in the field of marine biology.  The program is an immersion experience in which students study marine biology and carry out undergraduate research.  The group is led and taught by Dr. Alan Holyoak of the BYU-Idaho Department of Biology.

Participants live and work as visiting scientists at the University of Oregon's marine biological station located at the mouth of Coos Bay, Oregon - The Oregon Institute of Marine Biology.

This year the group has 14 students including students who are freshmen through seniors.

This is our classroom/laboratory space.  It has running seawater so we can keep live specimens in the lab and students can carry out a variety of laboratory-based research projects.

This is the RV Pluteus, the marine station's main research vessel.  Each group so far has been able to go out on her and collect plankton and to bottom tows.

This is the Dining Hall, dorms are on the top floor.

These are cottages for visiting faculty.

And this is the intertidal zone at Cape Arago, an easy 5-10 minute drive from the marine station.

Stay tuned to see where we go and what we do!
